Description
Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick; or, The Whale was written in the mid-nineteenth century. The story follows Ishmael, a sailor who embarks on a whaling voyage in search of adventure and a means of escaping his bleak life on land. During this journey, he becomes entangled in the complex world of the whaling industry and encounters the ominous figure of Captain Ahab, whose obsession with a legendary white whale ultimately drives the narrative.
At the beginning of the novel, Ishmael introduces himself and shares his philosophy of the sea as a remedy for melancholy. He reflects on the magnetic pull of the ocean, describing not only one’s personal desire to set sail, but also the collective longing of city dwellers for the water. Ishmael’s journey brings him to New Bedford, where he experiences a series of amusing and peculiar encounters while searching for accommodation before joining a whaling vessel.
As he makes his way through the town, he meets Queequeg, a tattooed harpooner with a mysterious past, laying the foundation for a unique friendship that unfolds against the backdrop of whaling adventures.
