Description
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a tragedy, most likely written in the late sixteenth century. At the heart of the play lies the passionate love between two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, whose families are locked in a bitter feud. Their love, intense and profound, encounters obstacles that ultimately lead to tragic consequences.
At the beginning of the play, the Chorus delivers a prologue that sets the scene for this tale of forbidden love, revealing the family conflict surrounding Romeo and Juliet. In the opening scenes, a public brawl breaks out, fuelled by the hostility between the Montagues and the Capulets, demonstrating the deep-rooted animosity that shapes their lives.
As we are introduced to characters such as Benvolio, Tybalt, and Mercutio, we learn of Romeo’s unrequited love for Rosaline. However, everything changes when Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet ball, where they exchange their famous romantic lines and fall in love at first sight, despite the irreconcilable feud between their families. This first encounter foreshadows the challenges they will face, as their love story unfolds amidst conflict and turmoil.
